Performing the Heimlich Maneuver on Yourself When Alone and Choking

2. Attempt to Cough

If you can make sounds or cough, your airway is partially open, which is a good sign. Forceful coughing may help expel the object blocking your airway. Avoid drinking any liquids to prevent further obstruction.

3. Perform the Self-Heimlich Maneuver

Here’s how to perform the Heimlich maneuver on yourself:

  • Make a fist with one hand and position the thumb side just above your belly button, below the rib cage.
  • Place your other hand on top of the fist for added pressure.
  • Push firmly and quickly inward and upward. This motion presses against your diaphragm, compressing your lungs to force air up through your trachea, ideally dislodging the obstruction.

4. Try Alternative Techniques if Needed

If the blockage remains after attempting the Heimlich, there are other methods to try:

  • Lean over the back of a chair to increase abdominal pressure. Place your hands in the same position as for the Heimlich maneuver, then bend forward to exert additional force.
  • Another method, developed by a paramedic, involves getting into a push-up position and allowing yourself to fall forward. This movement rapidly pushes air out of your lungs and may dislodge the object.

For pregnant individuals, use a modified Heimlich. Place your hands higher on the chest, beneath the breastbone, and apply inward pressure.
